It’s been just two years since Neighborhood Draft opened at 5921 W. Vliet St. But in that short period of time, the friendly bar and restaurant has swiftly become a Washington Heights fixture. And it shines particularly bright on busier nights when neighbors gather at the bar to watch a game or catch up after a long week.

But the holiday season brings out something more. Step over the threshold on a brisk December evening and you’ll find an inviting space where the warmth inside not only casts a glow onto the sidewalk, but gives the old picture windows a frosty haze.

This year, you'll also find a nice collection of well-appointed holiday decor, from twinkling garlands on the back bar and metallic gold bows affixed to pendant lighting.

It’s almost time to get your first taste of Neighborhood Draft, a new Washington Heights venue which opens this week in the former Maison restaurant space at 5921 W. Vliet St.

Curious neighbors can get a first look at the space during an open house soft opening on Thursday, Nov. 14 from 4 to 8 p.m. But the venue will be up and running with a full menu on Friday, Nov. 15 beginning at 3 p.m.

The venue, operated by Tomkens Bar & Grill owner Brian Felten, will incorporate "the best elements of a corner bar" with a menu of scratch-made casual fare. In other words, it aspires to be a comfortable neighborhood hang-out with affordable fare, a great draft list and some fun elements to keep things interesting.

A restaurant and bar focusing on craft beer on tap and small plates for dinner is in the works in Milwaukee's Washington Heights neighborhood, at the former site of Maison and Meritage.

According to an application filed with the city, Brian Felten, who runs the kitchen at TomKen's in West Allis, plans to open the Neighborhood Draft at 5921 W. Vliet St. It's in partnership with his mother, Michelle Felten, the owner of TomKen's.

Felten said he'll have a version of wings on the menu at Neighborhood Draft that are different from the battered and sauced wings at TomKen's — they'll be charred on the outside but tender inside, the kind he makes for parties at home.

I never thought I'd miss waiting for a table for Friday night fish fry. Part of the fun was always the crowd, that palpable thank-God-it's-Friday energy in the room after everyone shook the last of the workweek off their shoes. A crowded room is the opposite of fun during the COVID-19 pandemic, though, so it's the takeout-fish-fry life for me.

On the upside, I found a number of fish fries to love, fish fries that either are new since last year's Lenten season or just new to me. There's one rare revisit in this bunch — a restaurant with new ownership since I last was there, making it fair game for consideration this year.

As with my regular takeout reviews, I'm recommending places that have curbside pickup, or where the staff who speak with customers for pickup inside are masked (or both).

Put a little spice in your late summer with Tajin at these Milwaukee-area spots

Tajin, the Mexican brand of seasoning, always tastes like a little sprinkle of summer to me: Just a touch spicy with a refreshing citrus note. A cooling heat. A taste of foods and drinks like these could help you stretch out summer, too:

Fries with Tajin at the Neighborhood Draft Regular seasoned fries have nothing on Tajin-seasoned fries. (Everything is better with a little bit of acidity.) The Neighborhood Draft cuts its skin-on fries thin, and it will serve them plain ($5, plenty for two people) or with one of four seasonings, including Tajin, for an extra dollar. Have them with a craft beer on the patio behind the restaurant to soak up some summer; they're also a good companion for the fried chicken, beef brisket sliders or the other sandwiches on the menu.

Great neighborhood place to unwind, have some dinks and food. It nice to have a place nearby with a later serving kitchen. The decor gives a nice Milwaukee vibe.. Milwaukee “cheers” version. Where everyone know your name . We will be back . Service top notch, husband loves the wings, pricier but well worth the flavor and higher quality chicken wing.

This place has the best wings in Milwaukee, hands down! Their sauces remain unmatched. Its a cozy rustic establishment with a good community vibe. In the summer, their patio rocks. Maybe I'm bias because i live a block away, but everyone needs to experience this hidden mke gem .

Absolute stand up establishment! Excellent selection of local drafts and real tasty food. Might I even say the wings are on par with it's sister restaurant. They even have dessert. Need I say more?

Amazingly delicious! Both the grilled and boneless wings are fabulous. Lemon pepper fries and ranch are to die for. Great service and friendly staff. Highly recommend!

This hidden neighborhood gem is tucked away on Vliet street right across the street from the Highland lanes bowling alley. It’s definitely a great spot with a dim, mellow atmosphere. They have over 20 different beers on tap, most of which are local, and a full bar. They also have a solid food menu that we’re looking forward to exploring more. So far, we’ve had the Kobe beef sliders and they were great! I would definitely recommend them!
